Our vision of the new facility

In light of the limited space that the current facility has and the use of a private residence to shelter cats it is necessary to actively raise needed funds for a new facility.  YAAP intends to create and implement a new shelter that will consolidate the dog and cat care.  Through the board’s efforts in this area, 7 action steps have been formulated to complete this program:

  1. Acquire location to build a new shelter.
    1. The land has been purchased and available for construction
  2. Develop a comprehensive business plan to construct the facility.
    1. A construction plan is under development  to establish cost estimates and concepts of the building design
  3. Identify methods of raising funds for the capital project.
  4. Identify volunteers to assist fund raising.
  5. Develop community awareness program for raising capital funds.
  6. Develop alternative to designs based on financial achievements.
  7. Develop plans for shelter staff, volunteers and other necessary groups of individuals.

The Land

We have purchased land to build a new shelter.  We have out grown our existing building and it is not been able to shelter our feline friends.  The new building is planned to be built across from our Memorial Park.  We have started clearing part of the property in preparation for the next phase of our plan.

The Plan

The plan is for a 8,000 sq. foot facility that will provide shelter for the dogs and cats that come under our care.  Below shows the preliminary layout of the proposed facility.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

 - Mahatma Gandhi, Indian Statesman and Philosopher

YAAP was created to help unite the animal welfare actors and efforts within the York area for the purpose of maximizing the collective impact of these efforts on the York animal population as well as the community.  Through this collaborative effort, it is hoped that an atmosphere of respect and care for all animals will be created and the community will be more engaged in making animal welfare a priority.

As has been demonstrated by this plan, there are numerous organizations and individuals that have been, and will continue to be, the foundation of animal welfare preservation within our community.  More importantly though, this plan demonstrates that these organizations and individuals are not satisfied with the degree of impact they have been able to achieve to this point and are always seeking methods for improvement.  These organizations are largely dependent upon the generosity of the community to not only maintain current efforts, but also drive the creation of new ones.

So, the challenge to the York community is for citizens to do whatever they can, big or small, to assist YAAP in achieving its goals for improved animal welfare.
